Disposable virus sampling tube is a medical device product, most domestic manufacturers filed by a class of products, few companies registered by the second class products. Recently, in order to meet the urgent needs of Wuhan and other places, many enterprises through the "emergency channel" to apply for a class record license. Disposable virus sampling tube consists of a sampling swab, virus preservation solution and outer packaging. Since there is no unified national standard or industry standard, the products of different manufacturers vary greatly.

1. Sampling swabs: sampling swabs directly contact the sampling point, the material of the sampling head is closely related to the subsequent detection.
Sampling swab head should be made of polyester (PE) synthetic fiber or rayon (artificial fiber), should not use calcium alginate sponge or wooden swabs (including bamboo swabs), the material of the swab head should not be cotton products, because cotton fibers have strong adsorption of protein, not easy to elute to the subsequent preservation solution; however, containing calcium alginate and wood components of broken wood or bamboo sticks can also adsorb protein, and even inhibit the subsequent polymerase chain reaction.
Polyethylene fiber, polyester fiber, polypropylene fiber and other synthetic fibers are recommended as materials for making swab tips. Natural fibers such as cotton and nylon fibers are not recommended because nylon fibers (similar to toothbrush tips) have poor water absorption, resulting in insufficient sampling volume and affecting the detection rate. Calcium alginate sponge is prohibited for sampling swab material! There are two types of swab handles: broken type and built-in type.
After sampling, put the broken swab into the preservation tube, and the sleeve can be tightened after breaking near the sampling head; after sampling the built-in swab, put the sampling swab directly into the preservation tube, align the small hole tube built into the preservation tube sleeve with the top of the handle, and tighten the sleeve. Comparing the two methods, the latter is relatively safe. When a broken swab is used with a small size preservation tube, the liquid inside the tube may splash when broken, so due attention should be paid to the risk of contamination caused by improper use of the product. Hollow polystyrene extruded tubes or polypropylene injection molded indented tubes are recommended as materials for making swab handles. Regardless of the material used, no calcium alginate additives should be added.
The use of wooden or bamboo sticks is not recommended. In conclusion, the sampling volume and release of the sampling swab should be guaranteed and the selected material should not contain substances that affect subsequent testing.
